Summary

Urban Dead is a free-to-play HTML/text-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Kevan Davis. Set in a quarantined region of the fictional city of Malton, it deals with the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. Players enter the game either as a survivor or a zombie, each with different abilities and limitations.

This is a fictional character I created whilst role playing a survivor in the game Urban Dead. I played this game for about two years between 2006-2008.


Character

A retired veteran of the Malton Civil Defense Unit. Avaery now roams the town randomly lopping zombie heads off and maintaining the odd safe house here and there. She collects what little equipment she can carry and assists local groups where necessary.


Background

When the outbreak occurred, Madeline 'Avaery' Jones managed to stay alive by barricading herself in the Gillings Building in Galbraith Hills. She had been out partying with her fiancé when the zombie horde crashed through the doors. She watched in horror as her fiancé was torn to pieces by the flailing mob.

She evaded death's clutches when a passing Black Beret spotted the carnage and came to her assistance. Avaery wandered aimlessly through the streets of Mockridge Heights until she spotted a recruitment poster for the Department of Emergency Management to join the fight against the zombie apocalypse.

She enlisted in the Malton Civil Defense Unit and trained at the Kristi Of The Dead Campus in The Academy. She has been with the DEM and the Malton Civil Defense Unit ever since, vowing revenge on the apocalypse and those responsible for her fiancé's death.

In May 2007, Avaery was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major by her Commanding Officer - Ferrum Leo of Unit 8.

Recently she has become rather disgruntled by her CO's lack of leadership. Her initiative has been considered as 'going beyond the call of duty' by other members of the MCDU. She has become rather upset at this.

The 2nd of July 2007 is a fresh start to the month. Avaery is now the Commanding Officer of Unit 8 - The Legion. She will lead the unit with Second Lieutenant Bill Cohen. The changes came during the middle of Operation Perryn-ting where the MCDU is situated - holding Fort Perryn against a horde of zombies at the Fort Perryn Gatehouse. Unit 8 was tasked to defend the Malcolm Building NT [88,90] to maintain MCDU recovery and revivals. Avaery now holds the rank of Captain.

The month of August 2007 was spent in Starlingtown / Pitneybank where we annoyed the crap out of the Creedy Guriella Raiders and their associates for PKing. Their attitude towards us at the MCDU have soured a lot and we have been quite happy to do so. They've even made a special page in honour of our work done at Giddings Mall. In simple terms, we are on their KOS list, they are on ours. We care not for their sh*tcreek attitude towards the DEM.

I also whole-heartly enjoyed annoying the crap out of the CGR. It was especially entertaining to fuel their predictable self interests and virtual egos. It never seizes to amaze me the actions people take to defend their virtual-ego. It is too funny. I am a strong advocate of violence in solving diplomatic matters in Urban Dead.

August 2007 has been a big month for the MCDU. We have moved on from the Fire Marshall Bill debate and decided on keeping the name Malton Civil Defense Unit and changing our image altogether. We have new sigs, new artwork, new outlook to the future of the MCDU. ZombieCrack has come up with a fantastic design for our new forum signatures which look fantastic.

Unit 8 has some new faces too. We are honored by the new recruits we've received from The Academy and are in the process of restructuring Unit 8 from ground up. Recent promotions within the unit include Lcpl Gym Rat (to Cpl); Pfc Mike Avery (to Lcpl); and Pfc Attaboy2 (to Lcpl). Promotions are in light to our mission in Wray Heights working with the local DEM garrison in re-establishing the area. The mission was a success.

September 27th, 2007 - The MCDU is currently stationed in South Blythville, preparing for the move north - in to ruined areas currently being ravaged by Extinction, LUE and other zombie hordes. Officially there are more zombies in the game than survivors according to the game stats. The situation looks grim for human groups.

October 4th, 2007 - The Legions are operating in Owlseybank and Molebank as the main battalion moved in to secure Caiger Mall. Owlseybank has got to be one of the safest suburbs we've moved in to for a long time. Molebank not so safe though. We're swinging to Griggs Heights later to assist Unit 5 in securing that suburb next week.

Avaery has also joined the DEM Council in late September 2007 - following an invitation into the leadership body by her superior: Cameron Hawke, Brigadier General of the Malton Civil Defense Unit.

As of 2008, Avaery has retired from the game. She logs in from time to time to check in on her surroundings.


Role-Playing

I used to record game events on the unofficial Urban Dead Wikipedia. I only recorded between June 2017 to December 2017 from memory, and then after that I gradually reduced my time investment in this game.

Since I don't know when the game will get shutdown, or whether the related game wikipedia will be gone when that happens, I should probably keep a copy of the role-playing log below. Honestly it's a surprise that Urban Dead is still around in 2019. -George

Interestingly the suburb I've been in is no longer zombie infested. There seems to be a presence of the MEMS in the area too. Time to get revived.

You are standing outside Bunney Street Police Dept, a narrow concrete building. The building has been very strongly barricaded. 

Thick snow covers the ground, with footprints entering from the north-west, north-east, west, east and south, and leaving to the north, north-east, south, west and north-west. Further sets of prints lead into and out of the building. A collapsed snowbank shows where someone has fallen from the building. 

Somebody has spraypainted Join the MFD. Show zombies they suck at life. onto a wall. 

There is a horde of twenty-nine zombies here. 

There are twenty dead bodies here. You recognise Antis amongst them.

The Legions are moving to Yagoton to toy with the EF. We'll soon be back to 50,50 to support the DEM force there.

Came across an old buddy here Ferrum Leo. I revived him.

Gentle Drive Fire Station [67-71] restored to VSB+2 from DWO, one soul inside Hazok (44hp). Fram NT cades cracked DWO, restored to VHB+1, about a dozen survivors inside. Looks like DEM tools password changed again.

Moving the troops south to help out the DEM located in the Wray Heights suburb. We're rebuilding the safehouses after the LUE moved through this area about two weeks ago. Units 5 and 8 from the MCDU are being sent to support the team already in the area. 

Supplies will run low if we dont watch our reserves. Hopefully the troops will be armed to the teeth on their way down. Cant say the same about my current ammo situation! I should have taken another day before moving down - but dont think i'll survive an evening without those annoying CGR people romping around Giddings Mall. 

We'll probably take Pole Mall or Woodroffe Mall as resupply point if necessary.

The MCDU is going through some tough times as we work out new ways to do what we do best - "the future of the MCDU" is being discussed. 

My previous death was quite... gruesome and graphical. A clear indication from the state of my attire.

Moved to Starlingtown once more to rendezvous with the rest of the MCDU. Our tour in Buttonville / Wyke Hills ended abruptly when nothing was happening down there. The Militants of Barhah had moved by the time MCDU Unit 5 and 8 was sent to back up The Randoms in Wyke Hills.

Killed Cuddle Bug (1 bounty). He was from the PKer alliance group: Knights of Apocalypse.

Those zombies outside South Lumber are starting to grow in large numbers - possibly forward scouts from the large horde that is the LUE to the West. 

DEM tactics on display:
River tactics are used by most survivor groups because it is effective. If there is a large concentration of zeds on one super block, you are going to expect that other areas are very much depleted of feral activity and it would be a piece of cake to retake fallen territory. Zombies are very much after our collective brains, not our territory. Apart from Caiger Mall there arent many significant suburbs where human territory is extensively competed for. So we do what we collectively do best - run run run away!!!!
In terms of strategy - Mounting a resistance is only useful if you stand a chance on holding your ground. In our case - running away with minimal losses is far better than being annihilated or losing all your troops. The ransom for your POW's in war in this sort of scenario would be extremely expensive. Unfortunately zombies dont take prisoners. So you'll just lose them all.
We are fighting a war with zombies soldier. There is no such thing as rules of engagement.

I am now the Commanding Officer of Unit 8 - The Legion. Changes came into effect overnight, even though the details of the new assignment had been in discussion over the past two weeks. Ferrum Leo will step down due to conflicts with real life issues. I'll have Bill Cohen to assist me in future movements within the Unit.

I suppose i wont be making a move in to FMB's task force any time soon then. I dont really know what's going on with Fire Marshall Bill but the word is that the DEM council handed down a decision that wasnt agreeable between the stakeholders. FMB is probably going to leave the DEM altogether! Nooooooo!

My men are currently stationed outside Fort Perryn. Our inventories are depleting. I'll need to organise runs for the unit to the nearby Mall before all our supplies perish. Fortunately we dont have to hold the Malcolm NT Building on our own with a dozen or more locals bunking in the building.

Killed during the night by a zombie! Found myself lying face down in a puddle of blood with a stack of smelly corpses on top of me! Got up at Fort Perryn Gatehouse and munched on another zombie thug before lurching my way to the nearby cemetery. Pushed the emergency personal beacon on my wristband.

It's hard to push buttons when your fingers refuse to respond to your commands! A local reviver stabbed me in the neck and my legs turned in to jelly. I'll be recover my energy soon enough. Its good to feel alive!

Lost my Wikipedia login after a virus attack on my PC. Managed to recover the data that kept my login details. In the last week my unit has camped in a building in East Becktown doing absolutely nothing.

I think the guys are getting fed up with sitting around waiting for orders, and i don't blame them. I don't have the power to order them around and even if i did, it would just be pointless. We're losing some fine recruits due to utter lack of inactivity by the Captain. I bet this is what it felt like in war times - when units get Captains or CO's that did made no decisions.

Well, it still isn't my call. What people choose to do with their real-life time is none of my business.
