Description

Spent about 2 hours familiarising myself with the new release of QGIS 3.8. Honestly I like it more than ArcGIS. ^_^ It certainly helps to have knowledge of ArcGIS. It makes it easier to figure things out knowing the GIS tools that I'm looking for. It was only a matter of experimenting with a different user interface.

Summary

Spent about 2 hours familiarising myself with the new release of QGIS 3.8. Honestly I like it more than ArcGIS. ^_^

It certainly helps to have knowledge of ArcGIS. It makes it easier to figure things out knowing the GIS tools that I'm looking for. It was only a matter of experimenting with a different user interface.

Started off doing a fresh installation of PostgreSQL on my Windows 10 machine.

PostgreSQL

Then I installed PostGIS using the Stackbuilder application that came with PostgreSQL.

Stackbuilder

Booted up QGIS and started loading datasets. These are kind of old so I'll grab some open data from the state government later.

I love how fast QGIS 3.8 is compared to ArcGIS 10.6. Datasets refresh very quickly and I familiarised myself with 3.8 much faster than previous versions of QGIS.

I do have five years of GIS experience now so I'm not exactly fumbling around in the software anymore.

I want to move my mapping workflows from ESRI to this product and finally ween myself off propriety mapping software! ^_^
